From Prompt to Perfection: My Step-by-Step Workflow
Transform imagination into captivating AI art — follow my exact step-by-step prompt workflow.

AI image generation is fun — but if you want to create images that truly stand out, having a repeatable workflow makes all the difference.
Without a workflow:
👉 Your results may feel inconsistent
👉 You waste time on guesswork
👉 You end up with images that look "AI-generated" instead of polished art
Over the past year, I’ve refined my own step-by-step workflow that takes an idea from a basic prompt to a final image that’s ready for social media, print, or client projects.
In this post, I’ll share my full process — so you can adapt it to your own style and goals.
If you’re still choosing which tool to start with, first read 10 AI Art Tools Compared: Which One Is Right for You?
Now let’s dive in.
Step 1: Concept & Moodboarding
Every strong image starts with intention.
Before I open any AI tool, I ask myself:
What is the image for? (social post, blog, print, client?)
What emotion or vibe should it convey?
Are there any reference styles I want to echo?
I often create a quick moodboard in Canva or Pinterest to collect:
Reference images
Color palettes
Lighting styles
Composition ideas
This step saves tons of time later in prompting.
Step 2: Choosing the Right Tool
Next, I choose the best tool for the project.
Here’s how I decide — full guide here → 10 AI Art Tools Compared:
Goal | Tool |
---|---|
Cinematic, painterly art | MidJourney |
Clean product shots / social graphics | Krea or Leonardo |
Consistent characters | Leonardo or Stable Diffusion |
Quick concepts | GPT-4o, Playground AI |
Simple social content | Canva AI |
Choosing the right engine is half the battle — no prompt can fix a mismatch between your goal and the tool.
Step 3: Writing Layered Prompts
Now it’s time to craft the prompt.
I use the layered approach from Anatomy of a Perfect AI Image Prompt:
Subject
Scene / context
Style / art direction
Color palette
Lighting
Composition
Detail & texture
Constraints
Aspect ratio
I write the first version of my prompt and then refine it one layer at a time.
Here is How I Build a Prompt — Layer by Layer
Here’s an example of how I take a basic idea — an astronaut — and build it layer by layer into a professional-quality image prompt.
Subject (starting seed idea): "Astronaut"
Scene / Context: "Floating above pastel clouds at sunrise"
Style / Art Direction: "Dreamy surreal style, cinematic lighting, soft whimsical aesthetic"
Color Palette: "Pastel color palette — soft pinks, warm oranges, gentle purples"
Lighting: "Soft rim lighting on astronaut, diffused golden sunlight through clouds"
Composition: "Centered subject, wide-angle shot, vertical 9:16 for mobile content"
Detail & Texture: "Sparkles and floating musical notes in the air, soft cloud texture, subtle bokeh highlights"
Constraints: "Exclude text or logos, no futuristic city elements in background"
Aspect Ratio: "Vertical or 9:16"
Final Layered Prompt Example:
"Astronaut floating above pastel clouds at sunrise, dreamy surreal style, cinematic lighting, soft whimsical aesthetic, pastel color palette — soft pinks, warm oranges, gentle purples, soft rim lighting on astronaut, diffused golden sunlight through clouds, centered subject, wide-angle shot, vertical 9:16 for mobile content, sparkles and floating musical notes in the air, soft cloud texture, subtle bokeh highlights, exclude text or logos, no futuristic city elements in background."

Pro tip: I use this process not just for astronauts — but for:
Portraits
Product shots
Landscapes
Poster art
Social media content
Once you master layered prompting, you can adapt this flow to almost any subject.
Step 4: Using Prompt Generators, if needed
For batch projects or inspiration, I often use prompt generators to:
Speed up batch variations
Explore unexpected style combos
Build prompt templates
Top tools I use → Batch Create AI Images with These Free Prompt Generators
My flow:
Draft base prompt manually
Run variations through generator
Copy best results back into main tool (MidJourney, Krea, Leonardo, etc.)
Batching is how I create full sets of images for:
Social posts
Product collections
Themed series
Step 5: Iterating with Versions & Upscales
Once I generate initial images:
I pick the top 2–3 candidates
I generate variations on those (versioning)
I adjust prompts based on what works
Finally, I upscale the final image (especially for print or large social formats)
This iterative loop is key:
👉 First 4 images are never my final output.
👉 Version 3–5 often yields the best result.
How I Vary the Prompt (Real Examples)
Once I build a base layered prompt, I usually create 2–5 variations to explore:
Different moods
Different styles
Different lighting
Different composition
Here are examples of prompt variations applied to my astronaut art:
Cinematic Movie Poster Look
👉 Used for: poster art, Reels cover images, dramatic posts
"Astronaut floating above clouds at sunrise, cinematic lighting with dramatic contrast, teal and orange color grading, centered subject, epic wide-angle shot, ultra-detailed, strong rim lighting, lens flares, vertical 9:16, exclude text or logos."

Image generated with 4o Image by ChatGPT.
👉 Used for: fun IG posts, TikTok covers, experimental content
"Astronaut dancing above neon clouds, vaporwave style, vibrant neon pinks and purples, flat graphic background, centered subject, strong silhouette, vertical 4:5, suitable for Instagram feed, exclude text or logos."

Calm Storybook Mood:
👉 Used for: storybook style posts, gentle content, inspirational posts
"Astronaut gently floating above soft pastel clouds at sunrise, watercolor illustration style, delicate textures, gentle rim lighting, soft pink and lavender palette, storybook mood, centered portrait composition, vertical 4:5, exclude text or logos."

Surreal Concept Art:
👉 Used for: concept art, fantasy content, high engagement posts
"Astronaut floating in a surreal pastel sky with giant floating planets, dreamy aesthetic, soft rim lighting, high contrast between subject and background, wide-angle shot with strong depth, vertical 9:16, sparkles and dust in the air, exclude text or logos."

Why I Use Variations:
Because it’s fun.
To test which visual style resonates most with my audience
To keep the astronaut theme fresh → same subject, endless style possibilities
To create content batches with diverse moods (Reels cover + IG post + Pinterest pin)
To expand my Prompt Template Library → see Prompt Templates for Every Occasion
Step 6: Post-Processing in Canva
No matter how good your AI image is, post-processing gives it that professional polish.
My Canva post-processing flow → Canva Meets AI: How to Post-Process Your AI Images for Instagram:
Crop for correct aspect ratio (Reels, Stories, grid, blog)
Color grade (subtle adjustments to match brand or tone)
Add text overlays (headlines, calls to action, logo)
Layer multiple images (composite designs, carousels)
Final export → optimized for target platform
This is where you take your image from "cool AI art" to "professional visual asset."
Final step: tailor your images for the exact platform format.
